Quick Update of Business Issues

Dear Supporter,

As Legislative Session winds down I wanted to send a quick update on the business issues I have been leading on that are important in our district:

  • Randall Gross  with the Massachussets Avenue Surgical Center was instrumental in passing HB 327, legislation that will expand the capacity of Ambulatory Surgical Centers to care for patients. This legislation, which I was proud to be the lead sponsor on, passed the House last month, and has passed out of the Senate Finance Committee. It is expected to pass out of the Senate later this week. This legislation, supported by a broad coalition in the health care industry, will provide more options for surgical patients, and keep Maryland a leader in health care access.
  • Charlene and Tom Merkel with Bradley Food and Beverage partnered with me to champion HB 88 which will allow establishments like theirs to sell wine growlers in Montgomery County. Wine growlers are refillable containers, similar to beer growlers, that can be used to purchase wine from tap that have proven to be quite popular in neighboring Howard County.
  • As Chair of Montgomery County’s Economic Development Committee, along with my Vice-Chair Delegate Bonnie Cullison, I successfully sheparded twelve bills to support Montgomery County businesses and improve educational opportunities for our students. Those business people we partnered with included Julie Veratti from Denizen’s Brewery and Brett Robison from Republic Restaurant (Black Restaurant Group) on numerous pieces of legislation to improve Montgomery County’s competitiveness and strengthen our business climate. In the final days of session, I will be working hard to ensure all of this legislation that has passed the House of Delegates also successfully makes it out of the Senate before Sine Die, the last day of legislative session, which falls on Monday April 13. I look forward to returning to Bethesda next week, and continuing the important discussions about what we can do to strengthen businesses and economic opportunity in our community.
