Governor Signs Contraceptive Equity Act

Today, Governor Hogan signed into law HB 1005 - The Contraceptive Equity Act

Frustrated by unprecedented attacks against Planned Parenthood last summer, I decided to do something positive. Working with Planned Parenthood of Maryland, we took on the fight to expand access to family planning in Maryland. With strong support from Speaker Mike Bush we made that happen.

This legislation, which I sponsored, makes Maryland first in the nation for access to birth control by eliminating co-pays, requiring six months of birth control to be distributed at a time, preventing preauthorizations for IUD's and implants, requiring no cost vasectomy coverage, over the counter Emergency Contraception coverage, and more.

To learn more about this landmark bill, you can read today's articles in The Washington Post, "Hogan Signs Bill to Make Birth Control Cheaper" and in The Baltimore Sun,"New Law Puts Maryland at Forefront of Birth Control Access".

Delegate Kelly with Congressman Chris Van Hollen and
some of the 70 co-sponsors of HB 1005.
